Richard departed early the following morning, having received word from Bingley that he would be delighted to host him at Netherfield. Darcy and Georgiana stood at the front of Darcy House to bid him farewell.

Richard embraced Georgiana. “My dear, if you would like a change of scenery, write to me. I am sure you would find Netherfield very diverting, and Serafina would enjoy the company of some of the local wood nymphs.”

Georgiana gave her cousin a faint smile. “I hope you enjoy yourself, Richard.”

Before he stepped through the door, Richard said, “Darcy, is there another reason you are keen to avoid Netherfield?”

“Of course not,” Darcy said, far too quickly.

Richard raised a brow. Even Georgiana appeared curious. “Very well. I shall give your regards to Miss Elizabeth. I am sure I will be in company with her often.”

The very idea that Richard would get to be in Elizabeth’s company made Darcy’s heart writhe with jealousy. But Darcy needed to conquer his affections. He would not give into temptation.

Once Richard was out of sight, Georgiana turned to Darcy. “Brother?” she said, her voice soft and trembling.

“Yes?”

“What did Richard mean by mentioning Miss Elizabeth?”

Darcy had written about Elizabeth in some of his letters to Georgiana, but he did not expect her to ask about her. Georgiana had barely spoken to him for a month, except for the most basic of pleasantries.

“I am sure I do not know,” Darcy lied.

Georgiana hesitated before saying, “William, I would not wish for you to stop living your life on my account. If you wish to join our cousin at Netherfield, I would not blame you.”

Darcy took his sister’s hand. “I am perfectly content to remain her with you, Georgiana.”

Georgiana kissed his cheek, the first time she had done so in weeks. “Very well, William. I must meet Serafina in the garden.”

Darcy watched his sister retreat. Today was the first time he recognized a glimpse of the old Georgiana. He breathed a sigh of relief for that.
